New Zealand Trained Bilingual Social Worker/Counsellor
I came to New Zealand as a skilled migrant in 1996, worked for tertiary institutions as an administrative staff member for 8 years before completing my Social Worker qualification at the University of Auckland.
Since 2007, I have worked in the New Zealand health sector, providing social work and counselling. My work environment includes hospital inpatient wards, EDU, ADHB Home Health, and Hospice.
In 2017, I established a private practice, aiming to utilise my knowledge and skills to benefit local communities.
I believe there is no perfect model when working in New Zealand – the island of diversity. I work respectfully and sensitively with clients from diverse cultures and walks of life, using integrative, holistic therapeutic approaches.
My special expertise is combining social work experience and counselling skills to talk through issues like
· depression,
· anxiety,
· insomnia,
· social phobia,
· relationships in the workplace and families,
· financial hardship,
· housing problems,
· grief and bereavement,
· palliative care and carer burden;
· seeking ways to reduce or resolve issues and achieve goals set by the clients.
Since 1999, I have devoted my time to community development. From 2004, my JP duties brought me into close contact with migrants and ethnic communities.
My community involvement includes:
· Volunteer home tutor teaching new migrants essential English
· Member of COGS Local Distribution Committee
· Member of Waitakere Asian Support Group for the City Council and Police
· One of the funders of the Waitakere Ethnic Board served two terms as deputy-chair.
· Treasurer of the New Lynn Festival of Cultures Trust
· Board member and mentor to job seekers. Later served two terms as deputy-chair of Migrant Action Trust.
· Advocated and assisted in establishing the Language Line, helping new migrants communicate with the government agencies
· Advocated on behalf of international students for the draft Pastoral Care of International Students and the Open Work Visa for international graduates.
· The funder and service manager of the Chinese Action Network-Bridging (CAN-B) Trust
I am happy and able to provide culturally safe and responsive support to Chinese clients navigating needed psychosocial services.
Online sessions are available nationwide for Mandarin speakers.
