Emily Muir – Occupational Therapist

Emily Muir is an experienced Occupational Therapist based in Southland. She works with children, adolescents, and families to support participation in meaningful daily activities and improve overall wellbeing.

Emily has experience working with individuals from a range of backgrounds who may be experiencing emotional, behavioural, developmental, or sensory challenges. Her areas of interest include supporting children and young people with emotional regulation difficulties, anxiety, sensory processing differences, adjustment challenges, and participation in home, school, and community environments. She also works closely with families and schools to provide practical strategies that support wellbeing, engagement, and independence in everyday life.

Emily adopts a holistic and person-centred approach to practice, recognising the importance of the relationship between the person, their environment, and their occupations (daily activities). She works collaboratively with clients, whānau, and other professionals to develop meaningful goals and practical strategies that support participation and wellbeing.

Her approach integrates a range of therapeutic strategies, including sensory regulation approaches, strengths-based practice, and elements drawn from cognitive and solution-focused frameworks. Emily’s work focuses on building practical skills, improving emotional regulation, and supporting individuals to successfully engage in the activities that are important to them at home, school, and in the community.

Equine Therapy

Equine therapy has been used to treat anxiety, ADHD, eating disorders, addiction, depression, PTSD and many other mental health conditions, and, in addition to targeting symptoms of those disorders, is theorized to help people build confidence, self-awareness, and empathy.
