Travel Information
I would like to join you in your journey. We can call it a “‘Bus’ journey to recovery”. You will be an expert driver of this Bus and myself a passenger walking alongside you. “Together, we can make a difference”.My passion is on assessments and treatment of various emotional difficulties and/or related problems including but not limited to depression; anxiety/OCD; Trauma; self-harm behaviours; grief or loss and Adjustment issues. I’m also interested in treating children age 7-15 years for the same reasons including psychometric testing (Performance). Most of my achievements in life are based on accepting my own situation through “Acceptance and Commitment Therapy” (ACT). Depending on the situation, I use from time-to-time Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT); Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT); Trauma Focus Therapy; Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT); Solution Focus Therapy skills and often, Psychodynamic Psychotherapy in the form of Intensive Short Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP).We all know that “we marry our Fathers and Mothers” and re-enact our past without being aware. Prior to becoming a Clinical Psychologist, I worked in Cape Town for 4 years as a Midwife. I then worked as a General Nurse at General Hospital (Tygerberg Hospital) and finally as a Psychiatric Nurse at Psychiatric Hospital & Forensic Unit at Valkenberg Psychiatric Hospital in Cape Town where I was appointed as a Charge Nurse of two acute mental health wards.RESILIENCE I can deal with anything from disaster management to an acute crisis intervention OR Complex Trauma (PTSD), not forgetting current situations of COVID-19. Guess what? As a young man, I worked with the United Nations (UN) and Doctors Without Borders (MSF) for 5 years in many African countries and treated men, women and children with depression, anxiety or severe trauma, which motivated me to become a Nurse. Then later on I developed my interest to understand better “Human behavior” by studying Psychology and becoming a Clinical Psychologist.I strongly believe that “there is nothing impossible” if you accept who you are as a person, be committed under your circumstances and remain focused to achieve your goal. CULTURE I work within the context of: Manaaki (make sure your time is well spent), Whānau (change for those who matter most), Kaitiaki (Reconnect with who you are from the inside out) and Rangatira (let’s do this together: Haere Mai).I respect everyone and I’m proud of being from African heritage by birth and Kiwi by grant. kanahpsychology.co.nzkanahpsychology@outlook.co.nz022 189 5311
